The arrival of the F-35s at Eielson Air Force Base will have a profound impact on the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Oil and gas development is on the horizon, and that should bring jobs and boost Alaska’s slumping economy. But these fighter jets will have a direct impact on our area much sooner.
Agnew Beck Consulting has spent a year researching how the arrival of two squadrons of F-35s will affect the borough. Along with the fighter jets, 3,256 people — Air Force personnel, civilian contractors and dependents — are projected to arrive by 2022. And 85 percent of these people are expected to live in the North Pole area. They will start trickling in next year. The fighter jets will arrive in 2020.
Because of the influx of people, jobs will be created, bringing — indirectly — an additional 2,415 people to the borough by 2030.
